Microsoft Zune phone to debut at WMC?

Could a Microsoft Zune phone be about to be outed at next month’s Mobile World Congress? Windows Mobile 7’s appearance at the show, or lack thereof, has been the big Microsoft story so far, but could a phone-shaped surprise be around the corner? Steady online chatter has hinted that Redmond is about to follow in Google’s footsteps and announce its own mobile phone.

We’ve still never seen them on UK shores, but Microsoft’s Zune media player has a strong following in the US, and with MS also the force behind Windows Mobile, rumours of a coming-together of the two have existed almost as long as the three-year-old Zune itself.

But now Microsoft itself seems to have confirmed the Zune Phone’s existence – or so it’s being claimed. Engadget was tipped off to a Zune.inf file bundled with a recent software update that is “responsible for associating devices with the Zune driver”.

The tipster points out that the list contains three separate references to hardware IDs labelled as “Phone.DeviceDesc”, concluding that Zune has been updated to work with three devices clearly labelled as phones.

It’s hardly confirmation that Microsoft does have a Zune Phone in the offing – much less three – but we’re certainly curious as to exactly what devices the files is referring to.
